It has been observed in limited studies that elderberry can actually alleviate flu symptoms, including fever, headache, sore throat, fatigue, cough, and body aches. The most significant benefits are seen when elderberry is taken within 24 to 48 hours after the symptoms appear. In fact, research indicates that elderberry can reduce the duration of flu symptoms by more than 50%.

Although elderberry has been suggested as a potential remedy for COVID-19, it is important to note that there is currently no scientific evidence to support this claim. However, some studies have suggested that elderberry may be effective in treating bacterial sinus infections or bronchitis. Nonetheless, further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Apart from flu symptoms and respiratory conditions, elderberry is also used by some individuals for other health conditions such as high cholesterol and HIV. However, it is crucial to mention that there is currently insufficient evidence to support these uses.

As for the appropriate dosage of elderberry, it has not been standardized. However, studies on flu treatment have utilized 1 tablespoon of elderberry syrup extract four times a day. It is crucial to highlight that raw elderberry fruit, flowers, and leaves contain a chemical that produces cyanide and can cause nausea and vomiting, as well as more serious effects at high doses. People with an allergy to elder pollen should exercise caution when taking elderberry supplements.

If an individual has certain medical conditions such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis, it is advisable to consult a doctor before using elderberry.
